This is a breakthrough product. Take any Firewire mac (why not a nice, portable Powerbook?) and make a project studio every bit as something that would have cost thousands upon thousands just a few years ago. Set-up time and configuration is non-existant. The quality of the audio conversions is top-class, the two mic pre-amps are fantastic so for smaller demo projects you don't need a mixing desk or outboard pre-amps if you're out and about. With 8 inputs you can record a lot of stuff live, so is a far better choice for people with a full band than that Tascam USB audio interface that looks like a four-track. I've heard people call this thing 'expensive'. Yeah, it's expensive if you don't have 600-700 to blow but, god, this is the affordable pro-studio of your dreams - cheap, cheap, cheap.
Also, if you working purely with live or accoustic sounds - and not MIDI -the bundled software is actually pretty damn good and a pleasure to use.

Last week I purchased the MOTU 828 for my Dell 8200 PC and am happy with my purchase. If you are using the 828 with a PC running under Windows 2000 or XP, first download the drivers from MOTU's site and then proceed with the install. There are very helpful instructions on their site which made installing the 828 much easier. The sound quality of the interface is very good. After adjusting the trim pots, I was able to eliminate any noise coming in from my synths. I did look and read extensivley on the M-Audio and Echo products - both of which I think are excellent - but neither (yet) offers Firewire connectivity to my knowledge. The latency I am experiencing is 2.1 ms in Cakewalk Sonar and slightly higher in my SoundForge 5.0, ACID 3.0 and Vegas Video 3.0. I do recommend this product if you are looking for a good, flexable mutlitrack audio interface.

i just bought the 828 4 days ago. i spent my whole weekend configuring it. from the get-go i could only get the motu to work solid with asio audio. i.e. cubase, reason etc. however anything using mme legacy drivers (i.e. any sonic foundry products) sounded horrible! i tried two different pc's and a laptop running windows me, xp and finally 2000. i had removed my scusi card, network card, graphics card, tried reducing to 256 colors etc etc. no matter what i did to my system, it would not work with legacy mme drivers. i was ready to throw the 828 back in the box and send it back to motu. out of sheer determination i decided to try one last thing. sunday i installed a clean 2000 o.s. from scratch (no ghost images) and once i was set up i only installed the 828 current driver. after i installed the 828 first,i put on sonic foundry soundforge. it worked! after installing all my other audio programs one by one i got the system running. the 828 was worth all the trouble!!!! it sounds like a dream! what i put into it is exactly what it records!!! this thing is wonderful! i have configured many pc's for audio with many different products. i have never had the trouble i have had with the motu 828. on the other side of the coin, i have never heard anything sound as good as the 828. for all its fussiness with pc and windows, its still a good deal. obviously motu is concentrating their drivers on working with mac. thats fine with me. bottom line, if you want a good sounding audio card for a good price, this is the one! i love it and would buy another if this one was stolen or broken.

I'm waiting to get mine, just ordered it after heavy consideration. I'm going to use it with my main Mac now, a tiny iBook 500 with 20 gigs of hard disk space. A small but efficient setup. I can give you guys more info as I move on into full usage of the 828, but what I have heard so far and seen so far, it's by far the best audio interface for reasonable money - EVER - concieved. To date.

I just bought the 828 yesterday (4/20/01) from the Guitar Center around my way in Cherry Hill, NJ. I'm using an iMac DV/400 mhz, running Digital Performer 2.61mts. Everyone please listen to me. If you have a Firewire compatible mac, don't just think about this, get it !!!! This audio interface is too awesome. Especially if you run Digital Performer like me. It just intergrates with DP like it was made just for that program, which I'm sure it probably was, considering Digital Performer and the 828 are both made by MOTU!
I have never, ever, ever in my life dealing with computers in over a decade ever install anything as easily as I installed and ran the 828!!!!! This thing installed just as easy as a video game, honestly! And it sounds sooooo clean! If this thing cost $500 more I still wouldn't hesitate buying it. The only thing I'm thinking about now is investing in the future for a G4 Titanium PowerBook!
Wish I could give a rating higher than a 10!
