It's all in the midi synced step modulator. You can create some nice, quick, abstract fx with almost not trying. The the drums and synth sounds are ok but just seem to be there for shits and giggles.

Roland have some pretty orignal ideas for products (as far as big companies go). This unit is no exception. A hands on (live use) step sequencer of effects. I added this to my collection of lexicons a week ago and so far feel it is fantastic. I'm not a DJ, I write and perform electronic music live.

Lets just be clear what we have here. With experience of Roland products you'll see that the EF303 offers only a minimal set of parameters for the effects, for example only one type of reverb or filter. You'll probably note with dismay that the filter steps, but it seems that it steps less for high cutoff settings than for low (logarithmic pot response?). Only one effect can be used at a time. This was the cause of great dismay from new users when the unit first retailed for high prices.

Now clear about whats there, I'll comment on my reactions to using the unit: The first hour had me rolling on the floor with laughter and elation. Being able to hands on step sequence effects opens up so many new hardware sound sculpting possibilities. For example, using the filter sounds wild. Really very good and very fun to step sequence. In practice you won't notice the stepping because this unit is not for continuous note filter sweeps. If I want that I'll run my signal into a synth. Sequencing the ring modulator gives nice results. A very rhythmic effect is to sequence the reverb level. Finally, the synth bass with overdrive is exciting, deep, punchy, acid,... a very convincing model of a tb303...

this thing is pretty nice, the effects sound good. 4 realtime parameter knobs to tweak. all effects can BPM sync. step modulator is a cool new feature. fairly short learning curve depending on if you have used effects before.

some drawbacks: it uses consumer RCA ins and outs. Pros would have preferred 1/4" TRS but you can get adaptors. he grab switch can be noisy on some effects. click click. It can be set to effect a specific EQ range (low, mid, or hi) or the full range of sound, but cannot isolate 2 bands (low and mid or mid and hi) as on the electrix mo-fx, but I can live without that. so far I have only been able to use 1 of the effects at once. the tap tempo is fairly slow. it only can adjust by the bpm. when tapping to the beat the tempo jumps by 3-6 bpm, not very accurate if you wanted to use the step modulator without being MIDI synced. but when it is synced, rock solid.

overall a sweet, unique effects machine that can do alot. grab em up now, all the stores are clearing them out for $199 or less!
