Fruity Loops is the greatest software sequencer out there. The only draw back is lack of 32nd/64th notes. It works with midi, and can use your soundcard's soundfonts (doesn't use *.sf2 files however). It also comes complete with it's own little analog synth called the ts404. When this program is used with dX/VST plugins, it becomes somewhat limitless. Supports Fast Tracker 2 instrument files (*.xi) so you can add loop points to samples (good when u want to add pads or whatnot).
