Excellent build quality. Power amplifier runs just lukewarm after hours of use at normal listening volumes. The two units delivered have a slight difference in loudness, requiring fine adjustment using the rear level trims, and the unbalanced inputs have a tendency to pick up mains hum demanding careful installation. Balanced inputs are faultless.

Sound quality: absolutely astonishing for the price. The TR8 has the lowest powered amplifier in the Event 20/20 series of designs and this is reflected in a slightly loose sound – acoustically perfect but slightly ‘fragile’, not so solid and force-full. At normal listening levels the sound has an almost filigree level of detail, precision and stereo image, easily revealing, for example, the subtle differences in mastering between two CD impressions of the same track - one manufactured in the mid eighties, another re-mastered in the mid-nineties. Easily has the range to handle today’s broadband bass and top end. No harshness, except on a few commercial tracks that are, in truth, probably harsh. No appreciable fatigue for me after 13 hours at normal listening levels.

At louder levels the bass becomes very slightly overbearing, in my smaller listening space, without bass trapping. Excellent extension when driven by synthesizers, easily rendering FM sources down to about 40Hz – the bass seems to roll off very slightly earlier than 35Hz, but there’s plenty of lower reach below for getting a feel for the very lowest notes.

Users looking for a solid wall of head banging sound might be better off looking at the 8XLs or the 20/20s for that extra dollop of power and bass control. Users looking for a superbly revealing, exact and reliable acoustic image, for a little bit more than the lowest budget prices, will not be disappointed. I love these monitors and they’re about perfect for working in a project space.

Good Points
Superbly revealing, exact and reliable acoustic image. Great bank for the buck.
Bad Points
Units not matched, unbalanced inputs can be noisy.
