Another of Focusrite's Platinum series, quality at affordable prices. This one is intended for recording vocals but is equally adept at treating them during mixdown. It's divided into switchable sections like the Tonefactory, there's an input stage with a filter to cut bass, an expander/gate, a vocal saturator which can add a little distortion, optical compressor, EQ and a de-esser. |
This thing does the business for vocals, all the sections are optimised in one way or another to work with the voice - the three EQ controls are even called warmth, presence and breath, even drummers won't get confused by that (assuming they can read). The compressor gives the sort of smoothing effect that really help vocals come across and there's an extra treble control in case you lose any top end through compression. The vocal saturator is meant to simulate the sort of mild distortion you might get from valve equipment or overdriving analogue tape and it can give a nice edge to the voice, especially as you can choose which band of frequencies to distort. The de-esser is cool, it does the job with little in the way of unwanted side effects as long as you don't overdo it and you can dial in the best frequency for male and female voices. There is also an extra XLR output so you can use the non de-essed vocal in the mix and send a de-essed version to reverb and delay units.Combine this baby with a decent condenser and you'll have a great front end for any vocal.
