The Edirol UM-880 is a really solid piece of kit. I chucked it into my rack, plugged in my MIDI cables to my outboard gear, plugged the USB cable into my computer, installed the drivers and within about half an hour was enjoying very a solid MIDI interface. Edirol's drivers allow the user to plug up to 4 of these into a single PC, that's 32 MIDI ins and outs definitely enough for a small studio.

The MIDI patching feature is cool, I can patch my master keyboard to any synth in my studio without turning the PC on. It's possible to merge MIDI data from multiple inputs to one or multiple outputs. The MIDI filtering options are modest definitely not on the scale of the software filtering MIDIox but quite useful.

The drivers are sweet - no more MIDI yoke on PC - up to 4 applications can use each MIDI input / output. If you need more MIDI yoke is always an option.

M-Audio's interface has questionable build quality, Steinberg's interface - in their usual style - has incompatible drivers. If you need more MIDI inputs and outputs for your PC/Mac get this bit of kit.
