The Casio CZ-3000 singlehandedly restored my faith in Casio's otherwise crappy 1970's-2003 lines of junky electronic merchanise.
Ever listen to trance, darkwave, ebm, industrial, trip-hop, or any other fringe electronic music? Ever wonder what that CRAZY detuned synth sound is? It sounds almost like a horn, almost like a guitar, but it unmistakable (If you are of the genre, think Bad Boy Bill- Stomp to My Beat, VNV Nation- Epicentre, Assemblage 23, Document and many more). The seemingly most popular sound in dance music came mostly thanks to the CZ1, 3000, and 5000 synths. The VST plugin "PlasticCZ" has helped many electronic musicians, too many to name, to write hard-sounding synth stabs that no modern keyboard and amlost no analog board can touch.
The CZ is a fluke of value and waveform ingenuity. It is a Phase Distortion, simple 2-oscillator waveform digital synth. Programming is easy- 3 waveform tweakers, each with volume and depth settings. You can choose 2x 8 different waves (5 sine/saw/square and 3 bellish waves). The detuner, chorus, and portament, however, are the key. Detune one way +13 semitones from another to create that "Detuned" snth sound I was talking about earlier. Add chorus for an amazing stereo speaker sunbath. The portamento is great too, completely tweakable to give your new synth that "Daft Punk" sound. The board is simple and sweet sounding, albeit very 80's. You'll want to pick up a delay rack or pedal for the full electronica effect.
I have to give this synth a 4/5. It has become a very important player in electronic music as well as indy rock and many other genres. You can get them as cheap as 50 bucks on eBay, so if you see one in the price range of 50-150 bucks and want to try something new and different from the stereotypical modern "MS2000" sound, try this synth and you'll be happy you gave it a shot.
