Pretty cool machine. Sounds good, fx and filters are hot. Hell lot of parameters and options. But as many said, its not a "stand alone workstation". The sequenser sucks. Playback timing is horrible. Step programming: ???. Didnt feel like buying a extra sequenser or go back to the computer to sequens, so i sold it. To bad Ensoniq closed down. A asr-x with a rock solid/more advanced sequenser could have been The King.

This machine continues to amaze me. I've owned it for almost 7 years now, and quite honestly, I hated it for about 5 years. I tried to sell it a few times, and then I would discover something. Get bored with it, try to sell it again, and re-discover something else. The only reason I couldn't sell it was because the knobs are glitchy, and I removed the floppy drive to put in a zip drive, but the zip didn't work, and I lost the cable for the floppy, so there's just an empty space. It's a blessing in disguise! Why? Ok, let me start by giving you the negatives about this machine. It is NOT a beginners toy. There are still parameters that I have no idea how to use. I change values and I hear no difference. The sequencer is horrible, scsi transfers are slow, and the little nipple knobs will wear out. BUT the effects are GLORIOUS. I JUST found out how amazing the parametric eq's are in this box. I like my drums dirty.. I won an Emax, Casio RZ-1, and an akai s-612. 8-12bit heaven. My drums KNOCKK.. but I put it through the eq on the ASR and all I can say is wow.. I can make bland sample cd's hit hard. Kicks, snares, etc.. I'm a sample freak.. I just love samplers.. If you want something that will continue to grow as your skills do, you must invest in one of these.. I plan on making this box famous. Remember you heard me say it here first! :)

When I first got it my computer had broken down, thus I wasn't able to use my Cakewalk sequencer. I quickly learned how to sequence on the ASR x pro and realized this thing allows you to be a 1 man show! When I've sampled kicks and snares, it sounds as though it came from the asr memory bank itself. I am very happy with my red box. The only problem I have is the buttons.

This thing is amazing and even more amazing if you get one of the expansion boards for it. The Urban Dance Project board is great and the Real World expansion board is even better. The Real World is full of ethnic sounds that you wont find elsewhere. Just awesome stuff. Too bad ensoniq bit dust. They were a really cool company. Still some of the tastiest sounds ever.
