Could someone compare and contrast the JV-880 with the D-110? I tried the on-line comparison here but it was less than useful. I'd like to hear from someone who has used both.

Well-built, pro-quality synth. Easy, simple access to the Roland sound card library. The standard sounds are very good. You can quickly vary the patches using the tone (layer on/off) buttons. An expansion card will move the presets toward your end of the music making spectrum (while tripling your patches). Four outs, great sounds. 4/5 cuz you can get really buried in the menus if you don't watch it. Definite winner overall.

When I first picked this up I was impressed that a $200 module sounded this good. The samples were crisp and natural, the editing really turned some of the sounds inside out, and the effects can do spme interesting things (if you stick with the two main outputs, that is...)I wasn't totally bowled over, just pleasantly suprised...I spent a few days of ups and downs with it, (downs: struggling to get any of the freeware editors I found on the net to respond correctly, being pretty unimpressed with the drums, etc.)

Eventually I found someone who was selling a hip-hop expansion card and ended up being EXTREMELY impressed with the sounds on that board. Many of the preset patches are a little cheesy and dated now, but the raw waves provide a lot of inspiration and give the JV880 many cool drums that the original wave groups lacked. Now the unit has moved from being a useful but unexciting part of my setup to my #2 sound generating device (#1 is the good old Juno-106).

I still can't get the editors to work, though.

Everyone loves the piano on my jv880. Even the newest stuff does not outdo it. Great for programing synth sounds, and special effects with its onboard effects procesor. Works with cakewalks syex for uploading sounds from the internet. I'm selling it if you are interested. this was posted may 23rd 2000
