I really like this machine. The sequencer is awesome. I use it with the electronic (808) card for techno music. The swing and random functions are really cool. 8 outs are great. The internal sounds ain´t very spectacular but very crisp and clear, high quality sounds that suits any kind of pop music. The percussion sounds are very good. The 909 card is very hard to find. Overall a cheap and reliable machine that takes care of all the drums.

The Roland R8 isn't the most easy drum machine you can buy, but if you stick your mind to it and with a little bit of patience, you'll soon find out that this piece of machinery is the work of somebody who knows what they're doing. The sounds are just great. I have 7 of the 11 Rom sound cards, and even with pitch and decay adjusted, the sounds stay clean and pure! Who wants an 909 or 808 for 1500 euro, if you can have them both for mearly 1/5 of the price...!? Critics will say, I'm wrong, but when you use the kick-drum from the dance-card(909) and overdue on your PA, it just explodes in your face like a real 909. BANG!!! Take that and the many features (roll,...) and the possibility to use Ram-memory cards to store everything, you have a true classic drum machine, for a rediculous low price. The R-8 is everything you want and more. I LOVE THIS MACHINE!!

originally an R5 user, i bought the r8, specifically the r8 rack, cause i wanted to have more sounds. i got it with the "dance" and "electronic" cards, and i have to say that the "dance" card alone is worth the money i paid.

sure, it takes a bit to get into this machine, especially the rack (its only got like 6 buttons and the screen is TEENY) but what doesnt eh?

this is the absolute best machine ive ever worked with. live and in the studio - more outputs than i could ever wish for. the sounds - absolutly amazing. HUGE kicks, tight snares, sharp hats, everything i could ever wish for an all of it is PHAT! no machine ive ever used has this sound - big, round, and dark, but with amazing clarity. it cuts thru a mix and hits you in the chest. the best drums ever.

im a lifetime r5/r8 user - buy either machine, especially the r8 (any version) and you wont be sorry.

question - ive still got an extra slot for a sound card - what would anyone recommend? email me please!
