If this is FM, I'm very surprised at all the claptrap about FM being difficult to program. Maybe it is Yamaha's interface or lack thereof that made the reputation. The DS-8's controls lead to an almost transparent accessibility to every function and factor of the sound. It has only a 2x24 display but all the menus are cataloged right on the top. After half an hour of noodling around it had become second nature. I am not interested in recreating acoustic instruments, but wild and fascinating sounds that can delve into the heart of the listener's psyche. Emotive soundscapes for tuning the soul. FM power and dynamic range with the ease of an analog modeler. This synthesizer is every bit as good as the DW-8000. That's why I have both.

Wow, James... amazing! I said the same thing about the deLorean. Made in Ireland, wasn't it? Just like the Titanic.

Really, the DS-8 is a useful tool. GIGO. It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools. This can be a very sweet sounding ride or a growling gutterball. I don't need a DX-7, already have two TG-77s. I just like the way Korgs sound, y'know? And sometimes it's nice to have a simple keyboard just to noodle around with that don't sound half bad. This is it.

Oh my goodness....please people....this keyboard is utterly worthless when compared to even the poly800 or the DW8000 (a real synth) I had one and never found any sound worth playing live so I got rid of it and stuck to the D50 and DX7s. Please do not buy this worthless piece of shit.

Everybody get off the DS-8. This is a synth for programmers. You can get so many crazy things out of this board. It goes for under $200 now which is insane. No software synth can do basses and FX, pads etc like this mother. The DX-7 can't touch the interface. If you think this is a difficult synth to program maybe playing synthesizers is really not for you at all. Go get yourself a nice piano and bore all your friends. This thing is an EBM monster and makes some of the coolest patches this side of the JD-990. Go ahead and try to find one in a couple years! Or maybe you can buy one off of one of the non musical nerds who don't know how to program theirs listed in the reviews below. Best FM ever... Don't listen to those dorks!

This synth makes it dead easy sounding impressive and effective. From awesome vel-sensitive leads in unison to Roland-flavoured Chorus-pads in dual mode, not to mention fx tones. Certainly it must not be judged by it´s presets (this applies to almost every synth) and musicians NOT being able to get anything satisfying out of this almost foolproof keyboard should perhaps be aware of synths if not music in general. I´m a synthplayer for 2+1/2 decades owning countless synths including Jupiter, OB-8 and even play 3 DX-7 II same as the big DX-5. I´m further a bit familiar with the grand vintage saurians from different decades living near a synthmuseum. What I want to say is that in it´s basic sound a DS-8 knocks out DX-7´s trebles though having less bit resolution and in it´s own way matches up with every synth I ever had my hands on, if programmed appropriately. It seems not to sound like the often compared 4 OP-Yamaha synths. DS-8 is absolutely the most underrated and one of the most characterful sounding FM-synths ever, incuding Yamaha GS-1 and 2 that I personally know. I´m certainly NOT telling DS-8 is able to replace them. This is only part-wise possible, but it´s user interface, simplified sound architectur along with it´s very organic same as brilliant sound make it the absolute first choice for aggressive synthetic basses/leads.
