Hi, I've got the s550, had it for a while now, but can't understand anything... I'd be very interested in a manual or some kind of walkthrough. Email me if you know how to use this beast. Thanks!

I own approx. 20 of these series (S550/S330/S750/S760) and would NOT be without them... if you want REAL sounding strings and horns there simply is nothing better ever made! Just play your parts and drop them into the mix and catch your jaw when it hits the floor. The manuals DO SUCK, but they're written in "JINGLISH" (mostly badly translated english through Japanese) but if you have a little patience you CAN get through it... they REALLY needed a better manual writer! If you can pick up MULTIPLE units, you can do really amazing things... the samples were meant to be MORE THAN ONE AT A TIME... IE, the patches are labled 1st Violin, 2nd Violin, etc... and if you use them that way and cut the tracks seperatly this puppy will REALLY SHINE! A MUST FOR ANY SERIOUS STRING PLAYER!

S550+Monitor+mouse=As nice a 12bit sampler as you'll find. I've had mine for a couple of years now, and I must say that it's always done me right. Mine has the hard to find SCSI port. This, along with the CD5 OS, makes it painless to load and save samples MUCH faster than floppies. I've got mine slaved to an old 80mb Quantum rack-mount drive. Funny thing is that you still have to initially load the OS from floppy, then everythin works form the HD.

The filters have been talked about enough, and I don't really have anything new to add. They sound great. One thing that is cool that no one has mentioned, is that when sampling, there's a built in limiter that keeps the sample from clippin on input. This feature works great for making sure you get the loudest cleanest sample possible. It almost makes for the lack a DSP based "normalization" function.

All in all a great sampler for the money. If you're in the market for that 12bit sound, I'd concider the S550 before I'd drop $300-500 on an Akai S9000/950 or an Emax.
