You can use 8 external pads with the SPD 20, you need to use 'insert' leads (the kind that have 1 TRS jack on one and and two TS - tip sleve jacks on the other - In the SPD 20, each of the 4 external trigger inputs actually supports two triggers.

Hi out there in SPD-20 land. Sorry If my typing skills seem a bit brutal. This is the first time I have ever contacted anyone by computer. I was wondering if anyone has come across this problem and if they have a sollution? Does anyone know if another divice exists that doesnt cost an arm and a leg. So as to turn the SPD-20 from a 4 input device to an 8 or more imput device. So as to 8 external pads instead of just the four? And without having to drag around a Sampler. Thank You.

The SPD-20 sounds great, very playable, expandable with extra pads. I use it along with my laptop, midi keyboard and effects unit to make some electronic music in real time.

I own a SPD-20 for at least one year.

Pros : Various Percussive sound Palette. Sounds good. Can expand with more pads to do a full drum setup :kick, snare, hi-hat.

Cons: Sounds very Rolandish, the electronic, "cool 95" sounding soundset is going to badly ages. There`s no software to easily edit the patch. Because you cannot create quickly a full drumset. The pads are not overly expressive as Roland try to convince you.

I am giving a 3, since Roland just repackaged the spd-11 with the same soundset. No new technology added.

If I was now, as more and more connectivity to the computer is needed I would probably get a M-Audio Trigger finger (USB) or a more real e-drum set, maybe the sampling SPD-S.
