Spent some time with my friends MU-5 last night... the bottom line is: the drums are pretty cool. Everything else is utter crap.

Cheap GM box. Dead simple to use. It's portable and I use with my Amiga Octamed set up. Drums are good. The rest of the sounds ? Well , there's no FX and the sounds are General Midi. Got it new for 200 buck and it created some much needed inspiration for my Octamed tunes, so I guess it wasn't a bad deal. Mostly use it for the drums now.

I bought it because everything can be set from the front panel, so I can drive it from an Amiga with an oldish copy of MED - without the front panel, I don't know how I could have set up the drums at all. Sound quality is disappointing - in particular, the piano sound is far poorer than my ageing (10 years) Clavinova (CLP 50). Also, chorus, echo etc. effects are absent. The simple samples - such as the drums, are absolutely first class, it is the more synthesized, multi-octave awm sounds that let it down. In particular, the transition from one sample to another as the pitch changes is often rather obvious. Still, it's quite inexpensive and gets the job done. The coloured buttons are very tacky, though....

I use the MU-5 with my laptop to lead the worship at my church.

As a portable unit, it is a great tool. I also use it as a MIDI

input device when I travel and can't take a keyboard.

Most of the sounds are pretty good, but not awesome. I especially

like the French Horn and New Age Pad. -- Guitar sounds aren't very good.

Check out my worship MIDI's at www.theCross.org/gscc/midi.html
