The Jen SX1000 (a.k.a. Synthtone), is a very good value for the money. This Jen has 1 oscillator, which is a sort of hybrid digital-analogue situation using a rare IC - the oscillator is not a discreet transistor oscillator. The filter is real analogue and has a very basic but true sound to it. The VCF is able to self-resonate as well. Also supplied is a variable-amplitude noise source which can produce either white or pink noise. 2 complete envelopes, one for VCF and one for the VCA. A basic triangle LFO with a sub-sonic frequency range, which can modulate pitch, vcf cutoff, and/or Pulse-Width when PWM is in use. There is also pre-set keyboard tracking for the VCF, it is not adjustable, and it does not seem to follow along any usual tracking scale. Not suprisingly, this entry-level unit has no memory to store your patches, as there is no microprocessor inside the unit. The unit also lacks any sort of external control inputs, but a Retrofit kit is available from a 3rd party to add CV and Gate jacks. No mod wheels. The unit does have a 'glide' (portamento) function. Jen is built like a tank, very heavy and solid for it's little size, with lovely wooden sides, wooden bottom, and thick-gauge steel face and back plates. Picking it up gives you a sense of holding something substantial. The inside is laid out very clean and seems constructed proper as well, for the time. Overall, a pleasure to use, it stays in tune, and has a simple, yet pure and honest tone which is true analogue. Lastly, Running jen's output through a Sherman filterbank is mad and really gets the sherman going rough and thick, moreso than other sound sources hanging around here.

Great synth to start you off in analoge. It has one oscillator, but you be surprised at the sonics you will get out of it. It's reliable, light and easy to store. I paid £100 for mine in August 2002. I still love to experiment on it.

I own a SX1000 and I use it for alternative productions on CD - and even live. There is a good way to store the sounds: Take a compact-casette-booklet and paint 3 rows with 8 circles on it - mark the position of the knobs - thats all! I'm a bass-player, but the horrible-unbelievable-monster-sound of the SX1000 is a good blast on low frequencies and sounds like a bass-guitar plugged into a big muff.
