Berklee College of Music has launched an online destination where musicians can study, find jobs, gigs and network with music industry professionals. It offers a range of distance learning courses in five streams:
Music Production
Music Business
Writing
Education
Performance
The courses are designed to all fit round your lifestyle, based from their website Berkleemusic.com and backed up with other resources. They take around 2-3 hours of time each week and they are taught to small groups of students. The website allows them to interact with each other through chat rooms and undertake their classes when they like.
They have a number of Pro Tools courses that have been produced with Digidesign who are closely supporting the project. Other courses include Desktop Music Production, Midi Sequencing Basics and Lyric Writing to name a few.
This looks like an excellent way for people wanting to improve their knowledge of Music tools and techniques to do it without disrupting their lives. More details can be found on the website.
In addition to this they have launched an innovative product called Career Fuel in association with Guitar Center. This, they say, is a career resource kit that links musicians, music educators and music industry professionals around the world to jobs, talent, students, ideas, tools, connections and opportunities.
It includes an internet job search tool, personal web page space (including MP3 downloads and images), priority access to gig notice boards, industry directories and career resources. On top of this it comes with a book (How to get a Job in the Music and Recording Industry) and a $50 rebate coupon off one of their online courses.
This pack retails at $49.95 and looks like exceptional value (especially if you intend to take a course anyway). Check it out at your local Guitar Centre.
Developments for Korg's instrument have been slow but promising.
