Here’s something new…the fourth generation of piano. The designers of Pianoteq tell us that it is the beginning of a brand new generation of pianos where there are no samples at all but everything is truly modelled. The piano sound is created in real time and adapts itself to how the pianist strikes the keys and interacts with the pedals.
The manufacturers say that it takes into account the complexity and vivid character of a real piano such as the interaction of strings, pedals, soundboard, cabinet and hammers and that you can adapt the piano sound in a unique way, similar to what a piano tuner can do with an acoustic piano.
Total size is just 8 MB which is just a fraction of the competing piano sample libraries, which should make it an attractive proposition for use on a laptop.

‘The first generation of pianos began with Cristofori’s pianoforte in 1698 which came to maturity at the end of the 19th century with the acoustic grand pianos. It was followed in the 20th century by the second generation electro-acoustic pianos and the third generation sampled pianos where each note is a recording of how it sounded during a specific moment in time, not taking into account the complexity of the instrument.
Pianoteq is the first and only piano belonging truly to the fourth generation, developed in order to go way beyond the limitations of the third generation and to become a versatile and innovating tool.
