Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is presenting the world’s first DVB-H transmission in 5.1 MPEG Surround sound at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona. MPEG Surround allows transmission of true multi-channel sound at data rates currently used for stereo services and features realistic playback of surround sound over regular headphones.

MPEG Surround is a surround sound extension for existing audio codecs and allows, e.g. in combination with MPEG-4 High Efficiency AAC, compression of multi-channel audio at bit rates as low as 48 kbps while being fully compatible with existing stereo devices. It also features a binaural mode for playback of surround sound over headphones.

At 3GSM World Congress, Fraunhofer IIS is demonstrating DVB-H in 5.1 surround sound using a standard DVB-H transmitter and a portable ARM-powered receiver for playback. The receiver includes the new Fraunhofer IIS DVB-H player software with support of MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC/H.264), MPEG-4 High Efficiency AAC and MPEG Surround decoding that allows standard headphones to present a realistic surround image. This MPEG Surround binaural rendering happens in real-time in the player as the broadcast signal is received.

Fraunhofer IIS offers DVB-H server and client solutions including the new MPEG Surround format for licensing as PC software and for floating- and fixed-point DSPs. This enables broadcasters, IC vendors and receiver manufactures to introduce or enrich Mobile-TV services and devices with high-quality picture and surround audio. Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Surround software is also available for other systems such as DMB, MediaFLO, DVB-T, DAB, HD Radio, and IPTV.
