The Augmented Reality DJ System

A Simple, Low-Cost Dgital DJ Interface 20-Jul-09

ARDJ (Augmented Reality DJ) is an experimental DJ control system that incorporates a simple and virtually no-cost interface into a digital music workstation, along with visual feedback making use of Augmented Reality technology.

By choosing which printed symbols are placed in the playing area, the user interactively controls what loops get played and how they get played.

Here's a demo of the Jungle genre cards in ARDJ:

With technology like this, it's not too far-fetched to think that we'll soon be able to laser-print our music gear!

Amazing! It's like a paper Reactable!

I guess anything is possible if you design an interface around video scanning of symbols that one can manipulate.

Some big company should be getting in on this trend eventually. Video scanning... or even a inexpensive, large mat that would read symbols directly.

Could one draw modules and squiggle virtual patch cables? Could the symbols be anything, assigning little objects as parameters? A monopoly board mixer? A Matchbox car synth?

I'd be cool if you could integrate real physics into this - have the cards mounted on something that could be manipulated with springs or something. Or have the edges of the boxes solid so that moving elements could bounce off them.
