Un-boxing: Korg Kaossilator Pro + MIDI Playability

Wait, I can play this from a MIDI keyboard too?      12/02/10

No flash plug

3:24 mins

This one just came in, and as it was one of the interesting  NAMM products, I thought an unboxing was appropriate.

After playing around with it for a while, I considered it would be super cool to be able to play the pitched instruments from a MIDI keyboard, after all its got USB and  MIDI in, so why not?

Turns out this may be possible - watch and see.

We will be reviewing the unit next week, please leave comments here if you want any particular questions answered - we'll do our best.

Question! Can you use the XY pad to send MIDI out from the Kaossilator Pro to control an outboard synth, or to record notes into an external sequencer, constrained by the key and scale parameters? In other words, can I use the XY pad as my master keyboard controller into my synth rig? That would be incredible, as the key and scale settings on the original Kaossilator allow you to dome awesome lead jams. It would be great to be able to record the midi note values of those jams onto a midi track in my DAW. Thanks!

Nick, it would be great if you could set up a rig where you use the KsPro as one may intend.

BTW, does it sound better than previous iterations? My KP2 always sounded like I was in a tunnel when I activated it

Can I play more than 1 sound at once from a midi keyboard? Does it have some kind of multi mode?

Excellent! Just one question: can I have it when you're done reviewing it? ;-)

Hey Nick,

It looks like there is some convergence between this and the KP3 Kaoss Pad. What are the big differences and why would I buy a Kaossilator Pro over a KP3 or vice versa?

Cheers!

1. Are any of the programs polyphonic under midi control.

2. Can the looper be controlled through midi? with a foot pedal perhaps. Hands free would make it an even better performance device.

3. Is the manner for editing loops the same (fix, cancel, clear) as the original Kaossilator?

4. What do the new patches/drums sound like in comparison to the old ones?

5. Please show up the vocoder in action.

6. Also show the looper used on a external source.

7. Is tempo information stored with the loops?

8. How quick is the load time between changing songs.

Right I'll try and answer some right away:

Russ: yes XY will output controller data over MIDI - notes I'm not sure I will check. The strangely, the notes are not controlled by note values, but by MIDI cntrollers: Pad X, Pad Y and Pad T (touch) or trigger.

Not polyphonic - except for when patterns are playing - eg drum loops etc, You can layer sound apon sound -one at a time, but of course you have four separate loops to work with.

KP is mostly for effecting incoming audio, this is for triggering sounds - mostly (at least from what I have found so far)

Looper can be triggered via MIDI at least on off each part, I believe you can trigger record too, but will check

Will check your other questions also

Always the best info, and the quickest, most honest breakdown of new gear. As someone who has looked for this feature to be added to my KP3, I would be disappointed that this capacity will not be added to the KP3 in an update. So far I haven't heard any confirmation that note data will be sent as the machine is running in normal mode: I think it will be available in EXT control mode only (which is not desirable) Question: I realize you hooked up the note data via your laptop, but us hardware folks will want to know how to do it via midi (with an electribe or other machines), so could you show us if this works? Thanks again! www.coloringpad.blogspot.com

The original has 100 programs that I love, the pro has 200, does the pro have 100 programs exactly the same as the old ones?

When playing back a midi track from your Mac that was recorded using the Pro, back into the Pro's midi in, does it retain all the micro-tune nuances? (such as gliding up to a note and not quite getting to the perfect pitch)

Dear Nick,

I expect the answer to be NO, but I wonder if the Kaossilator Pro's internally X/Y-controller arpegiattor data can be sent to an external midi device?

Ever since touching the first Kaossilator, my dream has been to use it's arpegiattor to control other synths. If possible it's a dream come true, otherwise I guess I'll have to learn Reaktor or Max4Live :(

1. Are all the sounds stricly monophonic? Even the "chord" sounds (although they "sound" poly)?

2. Can you modify in any way any kind of program, or like the kaossilator are the programs permanent?

3. What kind of usb features does it have? (Midi over usb, audio over usb or merely sample loading over usb)

4. Could you demonstrate individual patches that are notable? Are all the patches new, or do they retain some of the orignial kaossilator? If so, how many?

5. if simply hooked by midi, does it natively send note data via the X-Pad and modulation via Y-pad?

6. Is it Pressure sensitive, is there really an Z-axis (which you called T ina previous commment. or is that "T" just an on or off note thing?

I think those are most questions ppl would have, keep up the great review nick!A nice demo song in real time would be sweet!

Hello, Nice to be able to ask questions before a review. A new concept is born ;-).

Here's my question: about the loops lengths: is it possible to do polyrythmic stuff? Can we de-synchronize the loops (1 running in 4/4, another in 3/4)? Greetings from Belgium. Ben

15-Feb-10 04:37 AM

Nick B    Said...

Hi Ben, looks to me like you get: 16beats, 8, 4, 2,1, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64

15-Feb-10 08:03 AM

Nick B    Said...

So, basically no as far as I can see. I ams still waiting to get hold of the editor software, which may unlock some other functions, but its not usual that this is the case with other Korg products.

Re: effects programmes. Presumably the effects programmes are effects on some audio. I'm assuming that these eefcts aren't working on the audio generated by the pad as the progammes modulation axis will deal with that, plus I don't see audio from programmes being routed through the effects programmes. Therefore the effect must either work on input audio (like a KP2/3 does)or are applied to audio from the SD card or both. Can you clarify how the effects work and what categories of effects there (reverb, delays,flanger/chorus, etc.)

15-Feb-10 04:09 PM

Nick B    Said...

The effects, as far as I can tell, they are just part of a patch, this is more of a phrase looper than an effects unit. For effects, you should look at the Kaoss pad, its a different beast.

hi Nick,

Some questions:

How many banks of 4 samples can be saved on the card?

Loading and saving speed to the sd card?

Can you exhange samples with different lengths?

Are the samples automatic stretched to the amount of beats?

Can you merge samples to 1 other sample?

thanks for all.

Greetings

Hi Nick I understand that it's not an effects unit like the KP's. What I was driving at is that on the Korg site it says there are 15 effects programs. I notice that there are 15 vocoder programs referred to too and that these are described as adding 'sintillating effects' to the vocal input. Now not having a manual available I'm trying to figure out if the 'effects' referred to on Korg's specifications page are just the ones that are used with vocoder programmes or whether there are another 15 effects that can be applied in the same way that a KP2/3 processes effects ( e.g. from an external source) or from an SD card source. Hope this clarifies my earlier question.

Used the Kaossilator and a mic to record some fun stuff already. I hooked the USB out to my laptop and imported the loops into the editor. 1)Can I layer the loops after I've recorded them on seperate banks?

2)After istalling the midi driver software from KORG I can no longer send the loops from the editor to the kaossilator, my Kaossilator is connected by USB, what am i doing wrong?
