It could be argued that the story of this year's MusikMesse was 'small'... smaller number of exhibitors, for sure, but also many cool small units - there's Korg's tiny Monotron, for example; A&H introduced their smallest iLive console, Focal had a really small near-field monitor... but one of the smallest items I came across was a series of high quality DI Boxes from KID Broadcast.
Honestly, I almost missed them; tiny, midnight grey boxes, on a black table on a stand with a black backdrop... with guys on the stand also dressed in black - really, they're going for the 'stealth' approach here ;-]
So low key, that Ali Tschertow didn't really want to go on camera, as he felt his command of English wasn't up to it, but in the end he relented and I got a small piece filmed.
I know DI Boxes might not be the most glamarous product... especially at MusikMesse, where there's all manner of weird wonderful and downright daft instruments on show, but if you think about it, they're one of the more crucial aspects of what we do - I mean, if you're in the studio, or performing live, then chances are your sound is gonna go through one of them, so best make sure they are top quality.
And these are, according to Ali - and several reviewers, too; apparently in a recent shoot-out, the Picolino DI's sounded better than units 3 times their price.
So maybe check them out - and get one to drop in your gig bag, just to make sure your sound will be all it can be - after all, these are not gonna take up much space :-]
