Women's Audio Mission, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in the recording arts, has announced a summer workshop series, geared toward musicians and composers.
"We had a great turnout for our spring classes, which focused on hands-on topics ranging from soldering to making your own mic," said WAM Executive Director Terri Winston. "Many of our students are musicians, and have been requesting classes tailored for them. So, we've put together a workshop series that focus on the needs of both musicians and engineers working with musicians--to help them get ahead in the studio, and in their careers."
The series kicks off on May 20 with "Turn It Up! All About Electric Guitars," designed to give both musicians and engineers a better understanding of the instrument; students will receive a free guitar cable.
In "Indie Artist 101" on June 10, students will learn strategies for becoming successful musicians, from forming bands to selecting gear to booking gigs.
"Composing for Film" on July 15 shows filmmakers and aspiring film composers how music is integrated with visual media, using a professional film score as an example.
Classes are open to the public; WAM members receive substantial discounts.
About Women's Audio Mission
Women's Audio Mission is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in music production and the recording arts. In a field where women are chronically under-represented (less than 5%), WAM seeks to "change the face of sound" by providing hands-on training, experience, career counseling and job placement to women and girls in media technology for music, radio, film, television and the internet. WAM believes that women's mastery of music technology and inclusion in the production process will expand the vision and voice of media and popular culture.
