Thought this one was worthy of an unboxing video - the Teenage Engineering OP-1 is a remarkable little device. Beautifully designed, even down to the packaging -  its been described as the Casio VL-tone for the 21st Century - we'll see.

So, you know the drill, leave any questions below and we will do our utmost to answer them either here in the video.

Nick, couple of questions:

1) What is the capacity for storing programs/projects?

2) What format does it store settings/projects in?

3) Any midi control via usb?

Can it midi sync?

RedWalks    Said...

Hi Nick , I heard rumours that patches of sounds you made were not storeable or factory presets were not overwriteable . Could you clear that up maybe...Cya

12-Aug-11 11:28 AM

NickB    Said...

You can store patches just pres memory 1-8 and hold for 2 secs or more, its then called a snapshot.

Dont think it can MIDI sync. Projects are stored in Aif audio format.

How is it as a software controller?

Is there a software editor?

Hey Nick,

How do you see the OP-1 in a typical workflow? More as an individual instrument you can use with other instruments chained to a DAW, or perhaps an all-in-one device where you can create whole songs?

Does OP take midi in? /swede

Can it chop audio rexstyle?

Gustavo    Said...

Will it blend??

Just kidding, I was wondering about the synth engine and if/how can samples be implemented besides the usual slicing, change tempo, etc...

Can you record to a wav file from the FM radio?

Nicks Secret Lover    Said...

Hey can you record the FM radio signal to a wav file?

14-Aug-11 01:38 PM

Oper-8    Said...

You can record the radio (or line-in, or mic) onto the tape (4 tracks available). Then either export each track as a .aif file (mono, no FX or EQ), or mix tracks (Album mode) to a single file (stereo, including FX and EQ).

14-Aug-11 10:55 PM

Oper-8    Said...

There are 8 synth engines (Cluster, Digital, FM, Phase, String, Pulse, Dr Wave, Sampler). For each engine you can set the envelope, FX and LFO. You also have a Drum Sampler engine.

Interesting instrument. It seems to have an aesthetic somewhere between an early 80's Casio and a Macbook Pro!

I would be curious to see how it functions as a midi sound module, controlled by a conventionial keyboard. Also, are the outputs 1/8" or 1/4"?

Some more answers: Capacity 512MB, MIDI control via USB - yes both directions, velocity sensitive on input.

No sync in or out, does not transmit clock as far as I can tell. No quantize, the recorder is liner with soe basic editing. to ensure tight recordings, you would use the pattern sequencer.

Workflow, not sure - still trying to figure out how that would work, my current guess is that it would work best a s a standalone sketchpad and perhaps an addition to a laptop as it will work as a MIDI controller too.

A couple things I was wondering. Is there a real-time looping feature a'la digital performer's polar that will allow pass after pass of loop recording? If, so, please give an idea of memory specs available for looping. Also, is there a way to speed up and slow down samples minus the chipmunch or robot effect? If so, How's the quality.

15-Aug-11 08:10 AM

GPSchnyder    Said...

Can I use it both ways via usb/CamconnectionKit/iPad with NanoStudio?

15-Aug-11 04:34 PM

Nick B    Said...

Just finishing up the review - answers: yes you can hook up via cam connection kit and USB to iPad - works well. Workflow, thats tricky - I'm not sure the synth sounds are wow enough to make it must have for sounds, but for sketches, yes I think so.

no sync in or out - this is a shame - be nice to integrate with other stuff

FM radio can record directly into sampler, tape or album modes.

no software editor, MIDI cc is fixed not sure what the logic is on that.

For the price I thought it was going to be an analogue polysynth but it is actually a soft-synth in a toy looking controller.

garra9blanca 08-Mar-12 09:14 PM

@sonicstate Nick: Is it worth the 800 bucks and would you recommend it for beginners?

GreeenGiantt 03-Feb-12 09:30 PM

I have experience with djing and I have never bought a synth and im wondering is this thing realy worth 800 because that is big cash for me but im willing to pay for this thing , im in love with it

diesel5471 28-Jan-12 07:38 PM

800

00frozenzoo00 21-Jan-12 05:43 PM

NEVER WORTH 799 !!!!!!

DeinHode 26-Dec-11 09:34 PM

is it dificullt for a beginner to use it?

MusiktechnikBug 05-Dec-11 05:41 PM

For a german OP-1 review, check: de-bug.de/musiktechnik/archives/5392.html

AtaTheArchitect 05-Dec-11 08:13 AM

how much does it cost

MayelGura 11-Nov-11 06:10 PM

Perfect for creating nice audio for your game project... Too expensive tho

ArsiekDHOL 27-Oct-11 01:36 PM

this little thing looks like a toy, a toy that cost 800 USD xD

MrMRSEBASTIAN94 26-Oct-11 03:12 AM

Where can I get Teenage Engineering OP-1 Rally I Want that please HELP me I want that

fidelmanj13 13-Oct-11 06:12 PM

where do i go to buy one

tchapps1 12-Oct-11 02:03 AM

I wish I had 800+ dollars to get one.

0gep 01-Oct-11 05:55 PM

I WANT THAT WEIRD THING!!! :D

sonicstate 17-Aug-11 09:50 PM

stored in the on board memory, 12secs of sampling 4x6mins of track time, 2x6 stereo album recordings. Simply drag them on to your computer when in USB disc mode

JSprayaEntertainment 17-Aug-11 06:46 AM

Midi / Tempo Sync ?

RueArsins 16-Aug-11 08:28 PM

this seems like it's worth the money if you can afford it, but that's the thing...if you can afford it. seems like if they knocked about 100 bucks off of it, it'd be close to a reasonable price. but there might be deals out there. some how i got my "Korg nano kontrol" half off because a knob was missing, so you never know.

Amaribrahi 16-Aug-11 06:08 PM

how does it store your samples, hard to find on that screen? how many hours of mic recording can you do? Can you swap disk space?

varoennauraa 16-Aug-11 04:29 PM

I hope, that its sequel will be called OB-1.

demoniacinsomniac 16-Aug-11 04:25 PM

Great! Finaly you are making a review on this synth :) I would like to see how the integration with some daw programs is going on, is it capable for making music, or is just a toy? That Audio output looks very cheap to me, and 800 eu for this kind of toy is too much i think. So what are we buying a toy or a synth? :)

djugel 15-Aug-11 04:59 PM

What about tempo sync?

bibibibibiotip 15-Aug-11 11:06 AM

Hi Nick, great that you organised yourself this little but expensive toy!

how is it organised for live use, i.e. how many sets/ songs can you save (prepare in advance), kind of question of sampling time

how is the sound quality on the small jack-out?

does the Synths really sound that cheesy?

how much punch have the drums?

can you connect any midi-controlling gear (for example a Behringer BCR 2000)?

how would this thing fit into a Rockband enviroment (for Synth enhancement)?

sonicstate 15-Aug-11 11:01 AM

keys not really keyboard keys, they are just switches. yes you can add your own samples to the instrument for drum kits of single samples - I guess you can add your own tracks too for playback

sonicstate 15-Aug-11 11:00 AM

MIDI is accessed via USB plug that into a host DAW and you have a basic MIDI controller via its keys and knobs, or a way to send MIDI to it from the sequencer or keyboard - velicity sensitive on MIDI input

sonicstate 15-Aug-11 10:59 AM

yep, built in rechargable, but can be opwoered via micro USB batt life 16+hrs

V19torrent 15-Aug-11 10:20 AM

Damn man i so want one already.

hongdekong 14-Aug-11 07:50 PM

oh and how is it powered? i hope not batterys?

hongdekong 14-Aug-11 07:49 PM

how would you use this? studio or live or mot at all?

Motokonl 14-Aug-11 08:15 AM

Like I said is was used as a prop in the video and not used to make the actual song. Both SHM and TE have stated this in interview, if you watch the Future Music special or SHM's Take One, they show how they did the programming all manually with EXS in Logic..

hammer13ful 14-Aug-11 06:19 AM

this thing is too sick

Slowlearner32 14-Aug-11 06:02 AM

It's Mike Shinoda's new toy ;)!

djugel 13-Aug-11 11:05 PM

The MIDI on this thing is still quite a mystery to me ... would to have you spell it all out for us.

played with a friends the other day... after about 20 mins I was totally comfortable getting around on the interface...

skiing54 13-Aug-11 04:46 PM

That was the OP-1

fimpson 13-Aug-11 09:01 AM

How do you hook it up to a bigger keybed i.e. your M-Audio Axiom???

RobotAndTheDEAMON 13-Aug-11 07:01 AM

I've got a Doepfer Dark Energy, a Koassilator Pro and a KP3. Is it so to say compatible with thoose devices or is it better as stand alone (synth, drums, fx from op-1)?

Motokonl 13-Aug-11 04:37 AM

That wasn't made with the OP-1. The synth only featured in the video clip. That One thing was done with EXS 24 and a lot of manual midi programming ;-)

foofeo 13-Aug-11 02:20 AM

I'd be highly curious to see the structure of the synth engine(s?) for those various visually depicted synth, and what parameters are being controlled by the knobs.

SamuraiRacer64 13-Aug-11 01:50 AM

Hey Nick- How do the keys feel? In other videos it seems like a keyboard sort of feel. Also, can we load it with more synth sounds? Supposedly it just shows up as a USB drive on a computer so i cant see it being too difficult. Thanks!

JHVH1 13-Aug-11 12:16 AM

I didn't know what I was about to watch but the design on this thing is impressive.

lolcat23 12-Aug-11 10:02 PM

Gah, cant decide what to ask, this thing is just too packed with strange and seemingly awesome stuff. i guess im mostly curious about how well this thing stands on its own. And how quickly does it "grow" with added gear - if any?

OllyOfCydonia 12-Aug-11 08:56 PM

i have been waiting for this for a looong time

skiing54 12-Aug-11 08:03 PM

Make the Swedish House Mafia - One synth!!!!

carianoff 12-Aug-11 07:32 PM

Whats the Battery situtation? How long can it run? also the biggest question in my mine is this... "Is it worth the price" Id like a grade scale on that question.

sonicase 12-Aug-11 07:15 PM

oops i mean "tombola" sequencer

sonicase 12-Aug-11 07:11 PM

i think there is an accelerometer in it, try shaking/tilting it to change some MIDI CC?

i'm also really interested in how that tape record function works, not so much on the device but i mean the electronics/programing of how they did that it's amazing what they can do with a 400mhz processor

the arpeggiator seemed a little odd, maybe you should fool around with that too

chessdude67 12-Aug-11 07:04 PM

Very cool!

 :)

Brainbox97 12-Aug-11 06:37 PM

can you really re-create SHM-One on it? LOL :)

mil1lion711247 12-Aug-11 06:05 PM

I got a mc-307 besides the sampling and a few more sythn engines would their be a good reason for me to get this when with my 307 i have 8 instrument tracks vs 4 with the op-1? it seem like to me that i could do more with my mc-307, this seem a lot like the 307 but with only 4 instruments i think i would feel trapped.
