Modular Audio Environment For iPad Upgraded

Retronyms release Tabletop 1.2 21-Nov-11
Modular Audio Environment For iPad Upgraded

Retronyms have released Tabletop 1.2. The new version adds the fully programmable subtractive synthesizer RS4000 and SoundCloud integration.

Retronyms say that RS4000 has everything you need to create just the sounds you're looking for in your music:

  • Two oscillators with sine, sawtooth, square and triangle waveforms
  • Phase, phase mod, balance and drive osc interaction controls
  • Low pass, high pass, band pass, peak and notch filters
  • Amp and mod envelopes and LFO
  • Six scrollable octaves

A Retronym's spokesperson told us, "Once you've tweaked those perfect tunes upload to SoundCloud via Recorder M2. Tracks can be public or private, and public tracks can be posted to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Foursquare as well."

Pricing and Availability:
RS4000 is available as an in-app purchase for $9.99, and to celebrate the release Tabletop is on sale for $0.99 through Thursday, down from its regular price of $14.99.

Got it for 3,99 € at launch and... I'm not sure if I want to invest any more on it, specially with in-app buys of 10€ for simpler versions of synths I already own on the iPad as standalones.

Rather prefer to treat the iPad as 1 "hardware" synth when using the likes of Korg iMS-20, NLog PRO, Addictive and Animoog.

but, that's just my humble opinion :)

'Modular Audio Environment For iPad' ? Has an hardware synth user, the title of this crap made me cringe. How can they justify language and description for a bloody I pad Ap. Who the hell dreams this shit up?

I played with Tabletop a little; it's cute enough.

But I really don't like the way that it parades all the synth modules you haven't bought in front of you with a (comparatively large) price tag.

Makes me feel like I need to pay more to use it properly.

Just MVHO

Currently the king of the "In App Purchase" Tabletop has great potential undermined by developer Retronyms' poor decisions and a cash grab mentality. There are far more detractors than fans of the app for good reason. Tabletop is hurt by terrible presets, glaring oversights - no user samples in the RS3 keyboard and MR8X Tone Matrix, for example - and pricey add-ons - $2.99 for a delay module and $9.99 for a four channel mixer with effect sends! Retronyms can easily turn popular opinion in their favor by either eliminating or substantially reducing the price of the IAPs - $9.99 for the RS4000, a weak sounding synth with an egregious price tag, is the latest insult to injury. Admittedly a better deal than other "pro" apps - don't get me started on Fairlight Pro's price to performance ratio - Tabletop could easily become Propellerhead Reason for iPad with a few tweaks and better IAP pricing.

Got to agree with AkaiPete with this one.

This app sounds so ordinary to the point of boredom. We need more great sounding apps like the Moog Animoog that are creatively designed to take advantage of the multitouch interface. Or maybe an iPad physical modeling app?
