Sonic Touch - iPad Music Show Ep 3

Korg iKaossilator, WIST and Addictive Synth 05-Dec-11

Hosts
Gaz Williams - Songsurgeon.co.uk
Nick Batt - editor sonicstate.com

We have a name Sonic Touch - thanks especially to Synthlab (sorry for the mix up!) who made the initial suggestion and for those who +1’d it. We like the fact that it is platform agnostic (though for now, we're focussed on iOS) and has the name Sonic in there - good work!

This week, we planned loads, then the Korg iKaossilator came out in iPad native form, so the show concentrates on that. And with Korg’s WIST capabilities - allowing sync between supported applications. We also take a quick look at Virsyn’s Addictive Synth, which also has added WIST from its recent update.

We look forward to your comments.

Featured Apps (iTunes Links):
iKaossilator    £6.99/$9.99 till Dec 31st 11
Addictive Synth £6.99

To me this is really sad, it's like a child's toy.I think down the line there will be red faces about all these shit'apps' that people played with, Maybe sonic state (to discount my cynicism) could keep a record of the number of released tracks made on the Ipads/Ipods.

I Don't Like Music    Said...

Popular music is littered with the sound of a children's toys. Kraftwerk used the Mattel Bee Gees Rhythm Machine keyboard on "Pocket Calculator". OMD used the Speak & Spell Machine to great effect on "Dazzle Ships". The B52's used a toy piano on "Dance this Mess Around." The "Gizmodgery" album by Self used only children's toys as instruments.

Apps - even silly apps - are no different.

In April punk band The Ultramods released an album recorded entirely in Garageband. Admittedly, it's not very good. But anything that makes noise is fair game.

I love freakey techno, and naff synthesiser sounds,(doppler effect, drexciya etc) we need to remember the mac gear is very expensive and not 'toy' prices. They are fetishised items and are given a value greater than their worth.a ten quid speak and spell is not quite in the same bracket as Apples expensive kit. If it comes down to opinion, I think grown men getting a bit worked up about a shit music app .Is sad. It doesn't stop me liking experimental music!!! Kraftwerk stole 'their' sound from Conny Plank ( read I was a Robot Karl Bartos)

Anything can be a toy in the wrong hands . Look at the bizillon utube vids of modular systems that cost more than a luxury car just to make an 8 step bleep blob loop . So for the in fad anti apple naysayers . If the iOS devices don't do it for you it' a matter of taste . So why waist your time watching a pod cast about something you are not interested in ? Naff off ; )

Apple mac people seem uncomfortable with criticism of there fetish gear    Said...

I watched them cause I thought it was bollocks, I was intrigued, I have choice too and am amused by trends in technology.I have been into music tech many years. you must be an apple Mac man? Am I right? I am 44 , music tech tutor, including radio production/midi sequencing etc I make techno (20 plus vinyl releases in ,America and europe etc) I think I am entitled to an opinion. That software was a joke .

If your music sounds bad on the iPad then your problem is not the iPad for sure, check somewhere else ;)

Interesting show.. Will get better as you guys refine the demos etc.

Interesting that there is a lot synth talk - especially on Messr Batt's shows.. The trouble with synths is, like all musical instruments, you need to learn to play one. Just having a "toy" or an expensive modular doesn't mean you can play one and make good music (whatever that may be nowadays!). You still need to spend time learning it. I have seen and heard far to many people with synths just doodling around and producing rubbish!!

Hm maybe SonicState/SonicTalk should develop a series of "master classes" on how to play a synth?

Great show! I got the iKaosilator on your recommendation. I have having a lot of fun with. However, on my Ipod Touch, it kills a fully charged battery in about an hour :( Do you find this the same on the iPad?

your show makes me feel happy. great job at explaining what' really relevant to know! great greatshow!!!

rajaananda 24-Dec-11 07:01 PM

You rock. What's the word on tempo syncing iKaosilator with Ableton using either an IO dock or WIST?

LavenderHMusic 17-Dec-11 03:20 AM

Just letting you music folks know that a new music notation app from Notion is out, and it's on a super sale until the 21st, really reduced. Maybe should do a spotlight? Not very synthy though, heh.

cyberzodiak 15-Dec-11 06:54 PM

Wonderful! Your presentations of all these iPad Apps is great! Right after having watched the last one on TouchJam I immediately purchased it and after improvising for 5 minutes on the sofa (sic!) my first little track was captured and on the way to soundcloud. So funny, isn't it. IKaossilator too is a great App. Having played a lot stuff on the hardware Kaossilator this new version gives you a lot more possibilities. Many thanxs for Your wonderful videos on making music!

sonicstate 12-Dec-11 10:47 PM

thats good to know, once it has made a connection, BT3 seems okay, but it just can take a few goes.

qwe1231 10-Dec-11 09:28 PM

Nick, you mentioned Bluetooth being wonky, but Bluetooth 4.0 (now in iPhone 4S and to be in all future Apple devices) is a dramatic improvement. Latency of 6ms compared to 100ms for old Bluetooth. This will be a real boon for touch-music devices. See Wikipedia for 'Bluetooth Low Energy' and

gigaom . com/ apple/the-secret-payload-of-the-iphone-4s-bluetooth-4-0/

(spaces put in URL so Youtube will accept it)

wheeves 10-Dec-11 02:25 PM

loving this show, i really like the walk throughs on the apps,im saving for an i pad now

mCKENIC 08-Dec-11 10:39 PM

Thanks for the new episode guys! Really enjoying the show. Please do a top 10 music apps for 2011 or just your personal favourites of the year. Love to know what you guys rate as the top music makers - when I finally get an iPad I would have somewhere t start :)

Keep up the great work!

Ycros 08-Dec-11 06:50 PM

Guys, you have to cover the new Lemur app!

LavenderHMusic 08-Dec-11 06:53 AM

Also I just checked out SunVox. Ohhhhh my gosh. For something like £2.59 you get a whole synth/sample studio with sequencer, tracker and module interface. This thing... Omigosh. Please to be spotlighting it. It's a lot like Reaktor, sorta.

I am enjoy!

LavenderHMusic 07-Dec-11 04:05 PM

Have you guys checked out the Reactable app?

patchbaymusic 07-Dec-11 02:01 PM

WIST is a great concept, however, the midi specification really need to be updated to MIWI (musical instrument wireless interface) before we end up with several incompatible formats. And while they are at it, how about merging rewire and vst into the midi spec for a super MIDI ? ... Oh yeah, great show sonic state.

MarctheDarc 07-Dec-11 12:31 AM

True. Still, i think you were right to claim your right - had i taken the time to read the rest of your post, i'd just have 2nd' the name suggestion the same as your other suggestion. No points for slacking for me ;-) I'm just enjoying the show like you said ^^

synthlab 06-Dec-11 07:17 AM

(thinking) ... i think i shouldn't bring this up, bottom line, it's not important, let's enjoy the music and the videos ... smiles all around ....

Ycros 06-Dec-11 04:34 AM

Cool show guys. Maybe at some point you can do a live stream with audience Q&A? (I noticed you switch the cameras on the fly :P)

MarctheDarc 05-Dec-11 11:29 PM

Yeah, that was partly my bad. I read the first line of Synthlabs suggestion and thought i'd 2nd that, never getting around to reading his name-suggestions. So honours are his, but it was actually a seperate "original" thought on my behalf, just slightly too late. I'd say that great minds think alike, but i dont wanna seem too self-absorbed ;-)

freesoulvw 05-Dec-11 10:03 PM

Great show. Great demo of WIST. Ims with ikaossilator is brilliant. They sound perfect together. Love ikaossilator shared with the world too. It's like open ableton for everyone to add pieces all tempo and beat matched to the initial song you start! Too cool. Sorry androidyites, nothing close.

freesoulvw 05-Dec-11 09:48 PM

Thanks to webcasts like these I'm actually learning the dialects of our brothers across the pond! :)

synthlab 05-Dec-11 06:14 PM

Great video! The new iKaossilator V2.0 is very cool, i'm really enjoying it, but if there's one thing that keeps it from being a true "pro" app, it's the ability to IMPORT your own samples (one shot or loops) to use them as sound sources. If Korg adds that it will be a real killer app! Thanks (again) for your cool presentation.

englishhermit 05-Dec-11 06:03 PM

Re Korg app. A lot more functionality than the KPro, better voices and easier to use too. Won't record external sounds/vocal loops though. App + iPad are only £150 more than the KPro and you get an iPad thrown in too.

englishhermit 05-Dec-11 05:57 PM

Excellent stuff. Thanks.

I'd like to echo the request for Android apps. I have a strong feeling that there won't be anything remotely comparable with the iPad because developers/companies aren't supporting it.

sonicstate 05-Dec-11 04:52 PM

I'm SO sorry about that, genuine mistake made in the heat of the moment - we will make it clear in the next episode. VERY SORRY for the mixup Synthlab

synccat 05-Dec-11 04:32 PM

That is just great! Keep 'em coming

synthlab 05-Dec-11 03:58 PM

I love you guys, BUT the suggestion to the name "Sonic Touch" was made by me and clearly marcthedarc wrote " i 2nd the suggestion to include other platforms and suggest the name Sonic Touch" a few comments after mine, which, may i remind you, included: "Don't limit this to iPad only, ... and my personal favorites: "Sonic touch" or "Sonicstate music touch" which tie well with the Sonicstate name ... " Anyway, it's not important, great show, i love you all, keep it up!

NakedJKid 05-Dec-11 03:37 PM

I don't think anyone will ever call themselves a touch jockey. The term will always be DJ no matter how technology changes. Look at print technology and words like ledding. It refers to using strips of led on the print block to make the line spaces larger or smaller. Now we use computers for that the name hasn't changed.

maitilupas 05-Dec-11 02:42 PM

amazing how this guy makes the shots transitions with the korg kontrol and at the same time is really focus on what the dialogue is all about , pro !!!! congrats!

Waveballoon 05-Dec-11 02:23 PM
