Depeche Mode In The Studio 2012

Lordy, did you ever see so much modular gear?      23/10/12

Depeche Mode are in the studio working on a new album. Scheduled for release next year, its still not named but the tour is planned to kick off early next year and run for well over a year.

By the looks of things, the new album will be a cross between "Songs of Faith and Devotion" (a personal favourite) and"Violator" - two of their biggest selling albums - Songs of Faith and Devotion also seeing some of producer Flood's finest work. (see our interview with Flood here).

This arty teaser with an untitled track (spot the 3/4 time signature change) features some sexy Modular Synthesis shots in what looks like a dream rooftop studio in New York - synth spotters, leave your findings in the comments...

I'm sure modulars are great and all, and my teenage years would not have been the same without DM, but I'm a little turned off by the flaunting of fashionable technology that most people can't afford. Like flaunting your Fairlight in the 80s. I'd love to see them make an album using nothing but MicroKorgs or budget ROMplers.

Wow, what a great song. Modular city, I love it. With modular synths you can create all types of sounds that are not possible with ordinary analog synths. There are no restrictions with modular. You can modulate the modulators with modulators and use a control signals as thee modulator. There is just no limitation on what you can do. Modular synths are well worth the price if you ask me, and you can build on them year after year until you have a monster synth like in this video. I cannot wait until this album hits the streets.

I seem to remember a DX7 preset or two on Some Great Reward, and Wilder himself said he could never program that synth, but that's not the point. It's easy to sound unique if you can afford gear that nobody else can. I just think the creative challenge of making an album completely within the limitations of more common or humble gear would be more interesting. And ROMplers can be programmed, by the way--I do it all the time.

I don't know. As Nick said, sound of Violator (one of my favs also). So I think the Modular is just rich guys toys not necessarily used for the production of this album. Many of the same bass, leads, pads and textures that we've been hearing since the 80s and 90s.

I could be wrong but I have 'some' of the same gear and it's an awful tall order to patch up a snare then record it single track at a time, W. Carlos style.

looks like they were at jungle city studios in nyc: http://www.junglecitystudios.com/

I spotted this gear (in about 150 screen shots): I believe it was all DM's shit (martin or course) but the ssl duality se mixing console is probably resident to jungle city in their penthouse studio

deeper a-100 system(s). looks like at least 3 3 row racks and deeper components (and others) spread all over the room. The Doepfer rack in the corner of the room …only the top 2 racks are full. The bottom rack is partially stacked.

vceq3 cwejman ph-4 cwejman mx-4S cwejman moon modular 568 quad sequential trigger source

theres a cwejman unit in the bottom right corner in the doepfer rack in the video thumbnail/ opening screen shot above the peace sticker. looks like an audio processor or something that is probably discontinued. Its not on their site…

korg ms-20

tyme sefari…looks like it might be a harvestman 1973…?

plan b modular triple event timer

zeroscillator silver eurorack version (cyndustries.com) a-111-1 vco2 doepfer a-143-2 quad doepfer cgs723 synthicon filter a-163 doepfer doepfer a-155 analog trigger sequencer. This is pretty bad. I also like the dark time semi modular. similar units, but different. vclfo rene make noise cartesian sequencer wiard anti-oscillator cwejman ctg-vc complex transient generator saw animator…yusynth has one and cyndustries has one. I believe this is the unit they modeled parts for the arturia minibrute. The module in the video is on neither of these 2 manufacturers websites mentioned. maybe it's an older model or from another manufacturer. the model in the vid has an oldschool OCR font. …ok. cyndustries makes it…located here: http://www.analoguehaven.com/cyndustries/sawanimator/ this is pretty bad. I have one on my minibrute. really thickens the sound. gives the foundation of my building an extra shake before the pictures fall off the walls. well. not really. but it does scare the cat.

the following drum modulars all together on 2 different rows in one case (a deeper case I think):

- a drum bank of modulars from analogue solutions ( http://www.analoguesolutions.org.uk/concussor/c-modules.htm ) …a video on this page sounds like it could be straight out of a DM song. nasty and crunchy. left side of web page first song in vid - looks like a a drum bank of modulars from cwejman - looks like a whole drum bank of drum modulars with a drum-08 and other drum modulars (mfberlin http://www.mfberlin.de/Produkte/produkte.html )

tiptop z8000 matrix sequencer http://www.tiptopaudio.com/z8k.php

cwejman sk1 mk2 3 osc system (all one unit looks pretty badass) http://www.cwejman.net/s1mk2.htm might pick one up for myself.

ems synthi

tom oberheim white desktop SEM module (not sure which one)

wooden synthsizers.com units (cabinets): filled with mostly synthesizers.com gear

qsc22 22-space walnut studio cabinet x 4 (3 are fully loaded but the top one (the 4th one) is only partially stacked)

qsc44 44 space tilted walnut studio cabinet x 1. also has some non-sythesizers.com modules in it. Quad sequence trigger noted above

you can get a really big pre-built system with 1 44 space unit and 3 22 space unit (equals 110 space altogether) from synthesizers.com for a little over 14 grand. add in the patch bay and the moon modular sequencer trigger and that might be what they have here. I didn't study the whole wall to know what all the modules they have in this unit. But it looks like its mostly synthcom gear.
