Winter NAMM 2013 Anaheim:

You've no doubt seen the teaser photo and press release for Casio's new Privia PX5S.

You'd be understandably be forgiven for maybe passing it over in search of more obvious synth stuff, but its worth a look.

The power of the synth engine gives you 256 voices - with four HEX layer voices (6 layers, effects filter), you also get the Privia piano voices and 88 key Tri-sensor, Scaled Hammer Action II. There's also the MIDI controller aspect, with four zones, which can also work over the MIDI ports OR the USB port separately, means you can control some iPad or laptop based voices in addition to the 256 you have on board.

A few other nice touches complete the package, and from what I heard in the flesh the sound is pretty impressive.

Available soon $999 street.

Yeah the sound was pretty impressive I thought. Apologies for the bad edit at the start. Too much haste.

Looks like it might be time to upgrade from my PX-330! I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this

Wow, thanks Nick; didn't expect that this would be such an interesting product. But the look is still a bit Casioish :-)

Impressive. Haven't paid much attention to this segment of the market since buying my daughter a $400 88-key Casio two years ago. Had this been available then, I may have justified picking one up.

Clearly they've thought of everything. Very impressive.

I'm not really into these kinda (weighted/master) keyboards but this really seems like a great product. Sounds pretty good and very versatile. Cool demo, got plenty of information !

Looks very interesting and promising. Specially for that excellent 88-key action on a $1k keyboard (probably street price would be cheaper).

Dear Casio.... Please release a super cheap mini keys version of this and call it the PX-101,it needs strap buttons on it too! Also a 37 or 49 full size key version called a PX-1000 would be awesome too. History says such products could be big sellers!

Casio? Really?!!    Said...

I own one of the least-expensive Casio PX Privia models (it's right behind me but I'm too lazy to look over there to see what the model number is). I love my Casio because it weighs about 23 pounds and it feels amazing to play. I never in my life thought that the Casio of 1983 (with their el-cheezio "pocket synth" products) would be releasing stuff this good 30 years on. I also never would have thought that Roland, Yamaha, and (for the most part) Korg would be releasing toys.

Casio rocks. Buy their stuff. They deserve to be at the top of the pile

Holy cow - that thing is insane!

And yeah - mini version would be incredible - give us the 101 and we'll buy tons of 'em.

I own a Waldorf Blofeld desktop synth and this keyboard would be simply perfect as a master controller for it. The PX5s even has a rubber mat on the top right hand corner which is identical in size to the Blofeld.

The PX5s is just the perfect board to learn piano on and to turn my little Blofeld into a musical powerhouse. I will definitely be buying one when they are released!
