MESSE13: Korg Volca Grooveboxes Video

Drums, B-line and analog poly - yes poly      10/04/13

   QuickTime (MP4)  | iOS MP4
12:24 mins

So it appears that the rumours were true, a new range of Korg Monotron/Monotribe-esque boxes are on show here at Musik Messe 2013. Named Volca, they already are kicking up a storm. We have the Volca Drum, Volca Bass and the new 3-voice poly synth Volca Keys.

We made a b-line for the Korg booth this morning and were fortunate to grab some time with the units.

Available in the Summer at the rather surprising price of around £120/€150.

That bass machine is a bit of a monster! All three are looking pretty sweet. Will be interesting to see how hackable they are. Go on Korg, do us a triple pack for £320.

Its never about quality with Korg.

Just make it cheap so that it sells.

Guys please safe some cash and buy a good product in stead of these toys.

More small toys for the kiddies. There will be a ton of these used on eBay within weeks. When is Korg going to bring us something new and exciting. All they do anymore is copy old outdated Roland products. Same old sound over and over and over again. We need something that sounds fresh, new and exciting.

150 euros! When I was a kid (many years ago), there was no synth gear as powerful and affordable as this. Well done Korg for inspiring a new generation of electronic musicians.

I think Korg has finally lost touch with the music industry. They keep putting out the same old sounding instruments year after year after year. The 80' are over guys, move on and give us musicians something fresh and new sounding to work with. How many analog synths and analog drum boxes can one have until your songs get stale, boring and repetitious. I give these kiddy boxes one month and you will see tons of them hitting eBay just like the Monotribe. Waste of money if you ask me.

11-Apr-13 07:06 AM

Bantom    Said...

I agree GTRman. Boring, boring, boring. Nothing but new toys for the kiddies. Same sounds in a different box.

plaid_emu    Said...

Yes, the same old sounds can't inspire great musical ideas. Like the piano, violin, banjo, oboe, cello, guitar, organ, human voice, etc.

I totally disagree with ^^ x2. If you think the Electribe series and the Monotribe sound similar, you haven't owned either. And Yes these are 'toyish', but also a LOT OF FUN! And what about the MS-20 mini? Sure it's a re-issue, but it's a re-issue of a HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER SYNTH...It's more about finding what works for you, I have a (modded) monotribe in my rig now and use it frequently. I also have a need for a x0x type drumbox, ala Volca Beats. At $150 you must be mad to complain!!

Wow... Korg got sick of waiting for Roland to re-create something 808- and 303-like so they stepped up to the plate. Cool!

GeTRealman    Said...

Oh GTRman, how I look forward to your obvious, stale posts claiming everything a toy unable to inspire true musicians while in no way offering any solutions or alternatives - what kind of "new sounds" are you expecting exactly? Go get a bank loan for a Buchla and leave music to the people who've been making it all alone, kids.

12-Apr-13 12:54 AM

GTRman    Said...

I expect new, fresh sounds when I purchase a new electronic instrument for my studio. How many analog synths & drum machines can one have before there music becomes repetitious and boring to the public. Where has the innovation gone with these companies. All that Korg wants to do is sell a tone of these cheep crappy sounding analog boxes. A good stable oscillator will cost you $250.00 or more in parts so you know Korg has cut many corners to hit this price market. These Korg toys will be flooding eBay in a couple of weeks from people who have become bored with there new toys.

12-Apr-13 07:10 AM

GeTRealman    Said...

But you're not talking about what in the world these "new sounds" (a laughable term) would even be or how they'd be created, as if Korg just has a magic bottle of "new sounds" just waiting but refuse to release them. Korg is reacting to what the market wants, the same as any company looking to make a profit - if you want innovation and new ideas I suggest you start looking to smaller companies and expect to pay a good amount for it. Obviously people aren't bored with analog yet - and guess what pal, there are kids who have to start somewhere and barely have the $180 for one of these "crappy sounding analog boxes" let alone $250 for just an oscillator and there are a whole lot more of them than you. The 303 is just a toy by your standard, and we all know how much the ones "flooding ebay" go for now.

I think they could be cool. I say check 'em out. If you like them, buy 'em. If not, don't. Problem solved. More choice can't be a bad thing.

GTR Man is undoubtedly a dude coveting old, unreliable, hyper inflated expensive analogs. You see them on GS poo pooing Korgs stuff all in aid of keeping the prices inflated.

My major interest of these three is the Volca Keys. Three note poly - excellent!!! Im so in need of an affordable poly analog. Im finding my mono analaogs becoming rather limited for my style of music. Will probably get the other two as well though - in fact no doubt about it.

Well done KORG!!

Meanwhile Roland continue to rehash and sell organs and electric pianos to pub cover bands.

Oh gerat more crap from korg. I USD to love korg for there electribe serie bit the last 8 yards They focus so Munch on the fast Buck. These machines may be 'analog' but They absolutly lease no room for creation. Of you listen to the demo's They all sound the Same. Thatcher said of you woud buy the full steun it Will Cost About $450,- safe some more and get à good synth or drum machine with full Specs end Endless more freedom to create real music. Korg gave is a new analog poly electribe esx2. Esx1 was so Munch Fin to use and i could make real production with test thing even though it was labeled a toy sampler. That said i thinking korg is listening to the people but maybe a Little to Much to the kids who just like to mes around and Are not into serious music creation.
