Are Headphones Actually Stereo?

US Dan Worrall looks at both sides      06/12/21

Dan Worrall has a fantastic youtube channel explaining all manner of audio and music related ideas -  as well as some we reported on for FabFilter. In this video, he demonstrates the idea that headphones are not producing sound in stereo - because in stereo playback, both ears can hear each channel to one degree or another. It is therefore binaural!

He uses an LCR mix (every element being panned to either the centre, left and right) to demonstrate the difference between stereo and binaural playback. He goes on to illustrate the impact converting your mix to mono has on the low end and shows some ways to add depth to your mixes. Dan uses the free Voxogeno SPAN to illustrate the affect of sound on the mixes.

More videos can be found on his youtube channel.
