For those of you who prefer their beat-making hardware style rather than totally computer-based, there are a few single box options out there, and one of the more interesting ones is the Beat Thang from BKE (aka Beat Kangs).

It's been out in the wild for a while now, and after a blaze of publicity, it's kinda gone a bit under the radar, so when I spotted their stand at Messe, I made a beeline for it to see what was new.

Fresh from his stage demo, I caught up with BKE co-founder and all-round nice guy Reavis Mitchell, who first gave me the news about a pretty chunky price drop from $999 to $699... talked about the new software and sample packs, and then gave me a great demo of how to construct a sequence quickly using the Beat Thang. Looks a lot of fun.

Rather than give you the whole shebag in one long video, it's split into 2 parts, with the second video showing beat construction.

Part 2 is here

Enjoy!
