The first in a new series of instructional DVDs has been released by Qtec Designs. Produced by QDVD in association with Level V, Essential Recording Concepts, features Grammy-winning multi-platinum engineer/producer Francis Buckley delivering his award-winning approach to creating world class records. Francis has worked with Quincy Jones, Alanis Morissette and Aerosmith among others and won the Grammy for 'Best Engineered Album' (Quincy Jones’s Jook Joint).
The first release, Essential Recording Concepts Volume 1: Studio Fundamentals, is devoted primarily to setting up and sonically treating your studio space. The idea behind the DVD's approach is that creating an environment that allows for good sounds to be recorded and accurately monitored is the first and most important step on the path to creating a great final product.
Topics covered on the DVD include surveying your studio space, setting up your monitors, treating reflections and standing waves, wiring your equipment, fundamental concepts of signal path and gain-staging, and microphone basics. The DVD also includes a section on building sound absorption panels and includes a variety of test tones for evaluating and fine-tuning your room's response. Commentary from industry experts, including microphone designer Peter Freedman (RØDE) and legendary transducer engineer Walter Dick (Equator Audio) rounds out the DVD's content.
Unlike traditional instructional DVDs, Essential Recording Concepts features information that is deliberately not brand-specific. Qtec Designs say that the time-proven concepts presented can be applied to virtually any recording setup, from a simple home studio to a full-blown production facility, and to any recording medium, from computer-based DAWs to hardware recorders.
