Blog: For All Of Us That Didn't Make It

US Not everyone is destined for the big time      29/09/14

It is worth noting however the obvious exceptions. These are the people that are genetically wired freaks that were born to entertain.

I was a bit of a fan of Queen for example. Growing up in the UK in the 1970's most of my friends loved them and to fit in I begged my parents for a Queen album for Christmas in 1979 I think it was. Imagine my horror then when seeing a clearly wrapped piece of vinyl under the tree only to discover 'Showaddywaddy Crepes & Drapes'. I still haven't forgiven my parents for that one, it's a sore point still.

The point here is that with someone like Freddie Mercury at the helm they were destined for success. There are plenty of other examples but they are the exception rather than the rule and the rest of us have to work that little bit harder to compensate for those attributes we may not possess.

In that same history thousands upon thousands of people have tried and failed to achieve anything other than the odd jam or rehearsal session, let alone a gig or even a first single.

There are a myriad of reasons why, ranging from they just weren't 'good' enough to not breaking through despite years of hard labour. In my own personal story we still talk about what happened to us 23 years ago. At first it was with a fair degree of bitterness and anger.

These days though it is with quiet historical reflection and some measure of amusement. The one thing we do agree on however is that we could not have cocked it up any more than we did, we had no clue at all about what we were doing. The biggest mistake we made, amongst so many others, was to assume that if the music was good enough the rest would take care of itself. It was all about the music.

For the record we thought it was pretty damn good but ultimately while it 'may' have been, there were so many areas where we missed the mark completely. But what a dilemma because to do the things that you actually need to do feels like the music you do make is secondary or being compromised in some way, a selling of the soul if you will.

For most creative types the thing you so long to do and the things you should do are completely at odds with each other in many cases. There are plenty of websites out there that will tell you what and what not to do, but few tell the real human story. We all have them.

Many of these websites speak of being part of a 'scene'. There is plenty of commentary about this one particularly when you consider a 'scene' is usually made up of like minded people kind of doing similar things.

Provided you don't disrespect that environment, for no other reason that karma will ultimately kick you up the backside at some point, it's stands as a great support mechanism in your early days. Assuming things work out however, inevitably you are going to move on. And what about the scenario where you don't fit into a scene or one does not exist.

This used to be constrained by locale to some extent, the Internet has removed that barrier. If what you do is entirely new and doesn't seem to fit, as was our case, only sheer confidence can pull it off. We didn't have enough of it in the end. Fashion and music also go together, it's a total package and yes, we missed this one too!!

To quote an example I refer you to 'Classic Albums' Duran Duran's Rio. What stands out here was these guys had a plan from the beginning. They had a clear idea of what they were doing and where they wanted to go. A fundamental part of that was image of which was under-pinned by prevailing fashion. When we got going we didn't even consider how we would even present ourselves on stage and it was a huge missed opportunity particularly considering we didn't fit into any scene so therefore it was a blank canvas upon which we failed to imprint ourselves visually.
